How Often Should You Get a Chiropractic Adjustment? A Realistic Guide

One of the most common questions we get isn’t “does this work”, it’s “how many times do I actually need to come in?” The honest answer depends on what brought you in, how long it’s been going on, and what you’re trying to get back to. Here’s how we actually build that number.

There’s no universal number, and be wary of anyone who gives you one

A 25-year-old with a two-week-old tweak from the gym and a 55-year-old managing a decade of stiff, degenerative changes in the low back are not the same case, even if they both walk in describing “back pain.” Anyone who quotes you a fixed number of visits before doing an exam is guessing, or selling. We’d rather examine you first and tell you what we actually see.

The three phases we actually plan around

  1. Relief phase, frequent visits early (often 2-3 per week) while pain and guarding are highest, focused on calming the area down and restoring basic movement.
  2. Corrective phase, visits taper as things stabilize (often weekly), and we start layering in mobility and strengthening work so the improvement holds on its own.
  3. Maintenance phase, occasional visits (monthly or as needed) once you’re back to normal life, aimed at keeping small issues from becoming big ones.

What actually changes the number

  • How long you’ve had the issue, chronic cases generally take longer to settle than fresh ones
  • Your job and daily posture demands, a desk job or physical labor both add their own stress to the plan
  • Prior injuries or surgeries in the area
  • How consistently you do the home mobility work we give you between visits
  • Whether you’re also addressing sleep, stress, and activity level, all of which affect recovery speed

What maintenance care looks like once you feel good

Once you’re out of pain and moving well, we’re not interested in keeping you on a schedule you don’t need. Many patients settle into a once-a-month tune-up, others come in only when something flares. Both are reasonable, the goal is matching the visit frequency to what your body is actually asking for, not to a set calendar.

Care should shrink as you improve, not stay the same size forever.

How we set your plan at the first visit

After your history and exam, we’ll give you a realistic estimate, not a sales pitch, and we reassess as we go. If you’re progressing faster than expected, your plan gets shorter. If something isn’t responding the way it should, we’ll say so and adjust the approach instead of just adding more visits.

Book your first visit

If you’re trying to figure out what a realistic plan looks like for your specific back, neck, or joint pain, the first visit is the place to start. We serve Laguna Hills, Mission Viejo, Laguna Niguel, Aliso Viejo, and the rest of South Orange County, and can usually get you in within a day or two.
